"Power Play" Youth Art Contest

Youth from the Eastside of Tacoma are invited to draw, paint, sketch, or digitally create original artworks to be considered for permanent display on fence panels at the improved sport court site at Verlo Playfield. 

Contest prompt: 

Create an empowering image showcasing the connection between play and heart health, inspiring individuals to embrace an active lifestyle while enjoying the fun of street hockey.

One Roof Foundation, non-profit affiliate of the Seattle Kraken, and and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health  are partnering with Metro Parks Tacoma for this contest and have generously offered $500 gift cards for nine winning artworks! Each winner will also receive 2 tickets to see the Seattle Kraken play live! 

  • Youth age 3 - 18 are encouraged to submit their original, unpublished artwork created in response to the contest prompt.
  • Limit one entry per person; please share the artist's school name or other connection to the Eastside with the entry;
  • Artwork can be in any medium (pen, paint, crayons, illustrations, mixed-media, etc.), and should be approximately the size of a sheet of printer paper, 8.5 x 11"
  • Artwork must be original and free of copyright restrictions
  • Upon submission, entrants grant Metro Parks Tacoma, One Roof Foundation, and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health a broad license to the artwork and consents that all artwork may be displayed and/or reproduced without limitation and without compensation
  • Please do not include your name in the design. Artist’s name will appear on a sign nearby the final published artwork. 
  • Project staff may modify winning artwork to meet production requirements.
  • Selected artists’ names may appear in news media, social media, on the Metro Parks Tacoma/One Roof Foundation/Virginia Mason Franciscan Health website, and other communications.

Three winners will be selected from the following age groups:

  • 3 - 7 years old
  • 8 - 12 years old
  • 13 - 18 years old

Winning artwork will be selected by a panel of reviewers representing Metro Parks Tacoma, One Roof Foundation, and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health. 

The contest runs through May 19, 2024. The artworks selected for the sport court will be announced by May 31, 2024.
